D.E.A.R DAY

Uganda celebrates the 9th Annual Drop Everything & Read (D.E.A.R) Day on 15 March 2023 under the theme Reading as a way of Life. The initiative led by Peace Corps Uganda is held in partnership with Ministry of Education and Sports, Kampala Capital City Authority, Deaf Link Uganda (DLU), Rotary Uganda, African Readers, Oasis Book Project, Knowledge for Children, Enjuba Spelling Bee and other stakeholders.

To promote a reading culture and love for reading in Uganda, the event attracts schools and communities in a collective effort to improve literacy. Deaf Link Uganda marked the day reading with deaf children at Mulago School for the Deaf; activities included storytelling, poetry and signed songs put to rhythm in sign language. It was a delightful and uplifting experience of shared joy, fun and laughter – as children put a creative touch to the event with their own stories! DLU handed over reading books donated by Oasis Book Project to pupils and teachers. The national celebration was held at St. Mugagga Nkozi Primary School with the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, Natalie Brown, as guest reader.
